The village takes its name from John L. Woods, who came down from Wells River in the 1800s and built a sawmill on the Ammonoosuc before helping bring the Boston, Concord & Montreal Railroad through town — turning a river-junction crossroads into a genuine rail and lumber hub. That momentum carried Woodsville past its older neighbor, Haverhill Corner, as the area's commercial center, and by 1889 it had taken over as home to the Grafton County courts as well, a role it held until the county complex moved to North Haverhill in 1972. The rail yards are gone, but Main Street still runs on the same commercial energy that built it.
