Franconia sits at the northern gateway to Franconia Notch, home to The Frost Place — the farmhouse where poet Robert Frost lived and wrote in the 1910s, now a working museum and poetry center. The town's other icon, the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway, opened in 1938 as the first passenger aerial tram in North America; its second-generation cars ran until October 2025, when the tramway closed so a next-generation system could be built to reopen the 4,080-foot summit.

The town was granted in 1764 and named for Germany's Franconia region, and for a good stretch of the 1800s its real business was iron, not tourism — a stone furnace built around 1801 still stands today as the only surviving iron smelter in New Hampshire. Long after that industry faded, Robert Frost bought a farm here in 1915, and Franconia's mountain views have drawn visitors — first for the iron trade, later for the Tramway, and today for the Notch itself — ever since.
