Barnet was chartered in 1763 — the first town established in what's now the Northeast Kingdom — and settled by Scottish farmers starting in 1774, the same wave that gave neighboring Ryegate its character. One of those early settlers, Colonel Alexander Harvey, went on to represent Barnet at the 1777 conventions that declared Vermont's independence and drafted its first constitution, lending his name to Harvey's Lake in the process.
