About Orford, NH
Orford was one of the original grants along the Connecticut River — chartered by royal governor Benning Wentworth as one of a string of river towns intended to anchor the frontier — and it was settled in the late 1700s by farmers drawn to the same rich floodplain soil that still lines the riverbank today. Samuel Morey, an early steamboat experimenter who beat Robert Fulton onto the water by more than a decade, made his home in the house at the center of The Ridge — built originally for the town's first minister and expanded after Morey bought it in 1804; the homes around his were raised by merchants, lawyers, and tradesmen who prospered alongside the farms in the valley below. By the mid-1800s, most of the town still worked the land, and that agricultural character has outlasted the industry that once surrounded it.
