About Lyme, NH
The Congregational church on Lyme's common was raised between 1809 and 1811 by master builder John Tomson, just twenty-five years old at the time, working from the same plan used for the meetinghouse at Dartmouth College a few miles south in Hanover. The result is considered one of the finest Federal-style meetinghouses in the region — a central Palladian window, an ornate fanlit doorway, and an unusual three-stage tower that originally held a bell cast by Paul Revere in 1815 (later replaced by one from Boston's Henry N. Cooper & Co.). Tomson's father built the row of horse sheds behind it at the same time his son built the church, and that row still stands today, a rare and remarkably intact piece of 19th-century rural infrastructure.
