About Monroe, NH
Monroe was originally part of neighboring Lyman before separating in 1854, and it wasn't renamed for President James Monroe until 1860. The town's defining modern moment came in 1928, when the New England Power Association began a two-year project to dam the Connecticut at Fifteen Mile Falls — flooding a significant stretch of farmland and homes to create what was, at its 1930 dedication, one of the largest hydroelectric developments in the country. President Hoover himself started the first generator by pressing a button from the White House. What survived the flooding is still some of the richest bottomland in the valley — one local farm has grown corn and hay on the same riverside soil since around 1800.
