About Wentworth, NH
Wentworth was chartered by royal governor Benning Wentworth in 1766 and granted to John Page and sixty others, many of whom came north from Salisbury, Massachusetts. Early prosperity came from farming the river intervales and from lumber — at one point the town ran nine sawmills off the Baker River. That relationship with the river turned disastrous on August 6, 1856, when dams upstream in Orford breached and sent a flood down the Baker River that tore out mills, houses, barns, and roads, widening the riverbed by nearly 90 feet in places. The town never grew much past that setback, and today Wentworth Common — gazebo, church, and all — remains the quiet center of a town of under a thousand people.
