Fairlee sits on the Connecticut River across from Orford, New Hampshire, with Lake Morey rising into the hills just behind it — a lake named for Samuel Morey, the same local inventor who bought and expanded one of the grand houses on Orford's famous Ridge and tinkered with an early steamboat engine over a decade before Robert Fulton's. It's a town shaped by water on both sides: river-valley farmland below, and lake-and-hills recreation country above.

About Fairlee, VT
Fairlee was chartered in 1761 and settled five years later, but people were using this land long before any charter — Abenaki families farmed corn, beans, squash, and tobacco on the river floodplain through the growing season for centuries before European settlement, moving into the surrounding hills to hunt deer and moose once the weather turned. Samuel Morey, who later bought and enlarged one of the grand homes on Orford's Ridge across the river, is the namesake of Lake Morey today, and the lake he lent his name to has drawn summer visitors to Fairlee for generations, most famously to one of Vermont's oldest continuously operating summer camps, still running on its shore.
