About Bradford, VT
The town was first settled as Waitstown, named for Joseph Wait, a Rogers' Rangers veteran who passed through the area on the brutal retreat from the 1759 raid on the St. Francis Abenaki in Quebec. It was later chartered as Mooretown, honoring a royal governor, before residents petitioned to rename it Bradford after the Revolution severed that particular loyalty. One of its odder claims to fame: a Bradford farmer named James Wilson taught himself geography and engraving well enough to produce the first geographical globes made in the United States, right here in town, in the early 1800s — a strange bit of ambition for a farming village, but very much in keeping with Bradford's long history as a place that punches above its size.
